Christmas icons

On this Christmas Day, I am reminded of the men this holiday celebrates and honors.  In a nation that imprisons more people than any other country in the world and has more than 3,000 men and women on death row, we celebrate the birth of a man who was arrested, tried, convicted, sentenced, and put to death by the government

With one in every 100 Americans in prison, we celebrate the life of a man known for his compassion, generosity, and kindness.  Commonly known as Santa Clause in America, Saint Nicholas was imprisoned and exiled by the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

These Christmas icons are profound examples of mercy, compassion, peace, and goodwill toward men, even the millions of Americans who are incarcerated in jail or prison; as well those who are facing criminal charges or sentencing.  They are also powerful reminders of the gifts available through forgiveness and redemption.
