Freedom & Liberty: American Style

On this Memorial Day weekend we acknowledge and celebrate the sacrifices made by so many to sustain our FREEDOM and LIBERTY.  To my fellow brothers and sisters in arms who continue to serve this great nation and your families, I thank-you.  And to those who have given of their lives and loved ones, I honor you.

Unfortunately, the concept of FREEDOM appears to be much different today than it was when I was a child or even when I served in the military.  As a veteran of the cold war and the global campaign against the communist menace the idea of police checkpoints, enemies of the state “lists”, and constant surveillance were all synonymous with the evils threatening America.  Today, these are all regular occurrences on our streets as our government wages war with the American people.

The federal government has taken over whole industries and passed sweeping legislation effectively making criminals out of everyone.  The following resources are available for additional research on this topic:  Three Felonies a Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent (Harvey L Silverglate); Without Intent: How Congress is Eroding the Criminal Intent Requirement in Federal Law (Heritage Foundation in partnership with NACDL); and

Police are trained in military style tactics.  They are equipped with military weapons in an escalating cycle of violence reminiscent  of the Cold War.  We have a “War on Drugs” a “War on Terror” and a “War on Sex Offenders” where millions of Americans are imprisoned, placed on “lists”, and targeted for assassination.

Examples of the tactics being used against American citizens are readily available, such as this Washington Times opinion piece  Paramilitary Police Do Not Make Us Safer; and

Detention without reasonable suspicion or probable cause at DHS Checkpoint:

7 year old girl, Aiyana Jones, murdered in Detroit SWAT raid:

Columbia, Missouri police kill family dog in marijuana raid with children present (graphic video):

As a member of the United States Military AND later as a peace officer, I took an oath to uphold the laws of the United States AND the CONSTITUTION.  The current political climate has resulted in a divided country where neither political party is “in touch” with the American Dream or those striving for it.  The political powers are committed to creating a government that provides for the people instead of being “of” the people.  To accomplish this, they systematically strip away fundamental rights and freedom.  These “leaders” have bankrupted our nation, morally and financially.

America, once the land of the free and home of the brave has become the land of the imprisoned and home of the timid.  The United States, once the promised land of opportunity and hope, imprisons more of its citizens than any other country in the world.  In fact, the US accounts for 5% of the world’s population AND 25% of the world’s prison population (see reports here and here).

Are you a criminal?  Before answering this question, take a look at this Heritage Foundation video and this CNN piece proclaiming I am a criminal and so are you.

Closer to the home front, I am pleased to report that in the finest of Memorial Day traditions and in salute to the sacrifices of millions to sustain FREEDOM and LIBERTY, police in Utah County spent five hours Friday night conducting a checkpoint involving thirty officers that resulted in the arrest of three one criminal and citations for two more; one for possession of heroin, one for driving on a suspended license, and one for not having a motorcycle endorsement.  The full story is available here.

As I express my sincere gratitude for the men and women who so valiantly serve to protect our FREEDOM and LIBERTY, I cannot help but wonder if it will all be in vain.
